Sense of Loneliness Triggering Obsession on Objects

Lifestyle materialism that makes people obsess on things could be a way to forget the loneliness in life. Love of material goods is also thought to be triggered by a lack of love and acceptance from the surrounding environment.
The link between materialism and comfort of life is not a new issue, but a team of researchers from the University of New Hampshire and Yale University seeks to provide a more concrete understanding of how one measures the monetary value of objects belongs to them in terms of feeling loved.
The research team then asked 185 people, average age 35 years answered questions. First, half of the respondents were asked to remember back to when feeling very supported and cared for others and the other half were asked to think the experience enjoyable, like eating the most delicious restaurants.
Then both groups were asked to estimate the price of an existing blanket in front of them. The group considering the experience of eating at restaurants rate a blanket price is more expensive than the group that given the experience of being loved.
Edward LeMay, researcher, said the high rate of a material object because it gives the sensation of security, protection and comfort. "Meanwhile, people who already feel loved by their environment and taken for granted where it also provides a sense of protection, security and comfort, their value on material things is reduced," he said.
In other words, people whose lives have felt "full" because of love, usually no longer obsessed with the material things.(Kompas.com -)
